Funding

Expenses for cloud services, for example computations on GCP, AWS or Azure, from which doctoral research projects benefit, can be funded by the DoCS, pending review. Any AI related expenses can not be covered.

u:cloud offers all employees and students of the University of Vienna storage space for their data in the “cloud”. The storage space amounts to 100 GB. You can access the data from any device and from anywhere. It is particularly useful for temporary storage and for sharing data easily. For collaboration in projects, working groups or teams, the ZID recommends using u:cloud pro. More information about u:cloud on the ZID website.

If you are interested in a Grammarly license, to be able to get reviews and corrections for spelling, grammar, punctuation, clarity in English texts, as well as to detect plagiarism and correct errors, you can contact docs.grammarly@cs.univie.ac.at. Please be aware that the Grammarly licenses can only be provided for DoCS doctoral students that are employed by the University of Vienna.

Overleaf, a collaborative cloud-based LaTeX editor used for writing, editing and publishing scientific documents, is officially available through the ZID.

The DoCS has already successfully supported a great number of doctoral candidates in participating in conferences and travelling to international venues. Expenses for conferences, publications, and other costs related to conference participation and publications can be funded by DoCS if they demonstrably contribute to the progress of the doctoral candidate's dissertation.

For conferences, A/B conferences and journals are preferred, in accordance with the A/B Publication Strategy of the Faculty of Computer Science.

Please get in touch with the organisational assistant of your research group or your supervisor as soon as your publication has been accepted to discuss the next steps and ensure that the above funding criteria are met.

Once you have received confirmation of funding, please keep all invoices and receipts documenting your expenses, as these are required for reimbursement. Please also observe the University of Vienna's travel policy and the regulations on travel funding in the context of the A/B Publication Strategy of the Faculty of Computer Science.

Expenses for examiners in the thesis defences which are not covered by the Office of Studienpräses (reisekosten.doktorat@univie.ac.at) can be funded by DoCS.

Expenses of external visitors and mentors, e.g. for research discussions or special courses, including career development or entrepreneurship, can be covered by DoCS.

Doctoral student initiatives can be very beneficial because they serve as a means of organizing various student activities, which can be a fun way of connecting with other doctoral students or meeting international colleagues in the field. It can also be of use to help organize or participate in unique events and get-togethers from which all other doctoral students can also benefit. 

A lot of these initiatives can be funded by DoCS and are strongly encouraged because they also promote better inter-peer communication, team building, doctoral school engagement, as well as external efforts and recognition. If you have original ideas for initiatives, let us know your ideas and get in contact with the DoCS!

Short term research stays at relevant international locations (secondments) of DoCS doctoral candidates can be funded by DoCS.

If you are planning a research stay abroad, please contact the organisational assistant of your research group in advance. Funding requests for mobility, among other funding opportunities, are subject to an annual deadline at the beginning of the year.

Networking events and social activities are a great opportunity to meet other doctoral colleagues, exchange ideas and information, and connect with peers and international colleagues. These events usually take place in a casual atmosphere, with good food, good company, and plenty of space for conversation and sharing experiences.

The DoCS offers a variety of activities for new and current doctoral students, including get-togethers, networking events, cohort meetings, guest lectures, peer coaching activities, and welcome events.

The doctoral student representatives also regularly join these events, providing an additional opportunity for students to share experiences and ask questions about life as a doctoral student.

Fees for open access publications if they are not covered by the University of Vienna or other institutions (e.g. FWF, EU projects) can be funded by DoCS.

Applicants must provide evidence that they have applied for funding through the relevant institution as described on its website and that their application was rejected due to insufficient funds, rather than due to non-compliance with the application process.

The DoCS urge the doctoral students to apply for summer schools and to join the retreats, summer schools or other teaching activities that might be offered to them by their research clusters. This type of activities are organized inside research clusters for better inter-communication, connecting, sharing of ideas and stronger teambuilding. 

By planning and organizing this type of activities, the doctoral students can also present their research ideas, research progress, but also ask their doctoral colleagues and supervisors about any sort of doctoral school or doctoral programme  related questions. 

You will get all participation details via your research cluster once a retreat or summer school is organized. Please also regulary look at the DoCS News to never miss this sort of important information!

Each semester, the DoCS organizes a welcome meeting for new doctoral candidates in Computer Science or Business Informatics. The DoCS welcome meetings provide a possibility to get to know the DoCS, ask any questions that might interest the students about the doctoral journey, learn about the doctoral programme's milestones, social events, activities, and funding measures organized by the doctoral school. 

The welcome events are always open to all new, aspiring and current doctoral candidates in Computer Science or Business Informatics, which are all officially invited to the event through their university email. This is an amazing opportunity for all students to get to know their doctoral colleagues and to interract with their peers. 

It is beneficial because the doctoral student representatives also join the events, where students can ask them anything that might come to their mind regarding the doctoral programme. 

The event is posted in due time in the DoCS event calender, so that all interested DoCS students can register in time.
